From 1 July 2014 changes to the NZ system for vehicle warrant and fitness came into effect. Under the old system all vehicles had to have a WOF issued every 6 months.
The biggest change is that new vehicles are issued with a WOF for 3 years and most other vehicles will change to every 12 months.
The changes were a long time coming, 6 monthly WOF checks were first introduced in the 1930s. Since then there have been significant improvements in vehicle safety technology with almost all new vehicles now achieving a 5 star ANCAP safety rating.
Here’s how the new WOF rules change :
- New vehicles – WOF issued for 3 years
- Less than 2 year old vehicles – WOF issued to the vehicles third anniversary of being registered.
- Registered on or after 1 Jan 2000 – WOF is issued for 12 months
- Registered before 1 Jan 2000 – WOF is issued for 6 months
Great news for buyers of new cars!
